What the hell, Washington?

I made the mistake of letting AutoTempest send me all across the country looking at Craigslist and now I’m so upset with the entire state of Washington.

How the hell did all of the manual XJs in the country end up there? And old Willys, and good grief this is amazing.

Keep in mind, this is strictly stick shifts, and I gave up after most of 2 pages

I see:

2 Comanches

10 XJ Cherokees (I have exactly 2 manual Cherokees within 200 miles of me)

19 CJs

7...miscellaneous

Let’s talk about the miscellaneous first.

1972 Jeep Commando. This is the bullnose vehicle, the least Jeep-like front-end ever. Quite rare.

!!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! , the LJR just like mine but diesel!

1953 Willys Wagon

1947 Jeepster!

1965 Gladiator (ok this is actually listed from LA but it showed up)

1942 Willys. For 5000!! No photos, so for all I know it’s a scam, but holy hell a WWII MB for 5 grand what the hell Washington?

A DJ5 converted to be an ice cream truck.

The CJs, oh my. There’s a Tuxedo Park ( !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! ), a ground-up restored Scrambler, a 1955 CJ-5 with only 8200 original miles and all its original manuals .

Y’all are just killing me.

A flatfender for 3500. Damn you.

The scrambler is much want. Very much want. And is the DJ really manual? I though those were all auto.

I think it is mere attrition from rust that has screwed your home state. The amount of classic rust prone vehicles I see all the time is crazy. Just the amount of 2 door manual XJs I've seen is insane. That's not to mention the rust free original VWs and the like I see all the time.

I have to point out, in our defense, that the diesel TJ is in Idaho.

As a Washington resident, I have to tell you: Prices are inflated here because of the urbanization. Also, idiots.

3500 for a CJ-3A, 5000 for an MB, I don’t know what inflation you’re describing but those are big-league NPs.

Probably the one I’m least interested in, too. Those classics are sweeeeeet.

Some of each were manufactured . No interior photos of that one so could be miscategorized.

Yes, but you have to remember...the entire Puget Sound area tends to cost more. Hell, my Crown Vic cost me $3,000 and that was before all the work done on it.

I’ve always liked the Jeepster... That’d be a fun car, I think. Also, I really want to take that ice cream Jeep and modify it for off-roading, but keep the paint job and all the ice cream equipment so I can be that one random guy on the trails giving out ice cream :D

This was a real Klondike of odd old cars for a long time.  It’s still good, but the hipster flipper contingent invaded some time ago, so it’s a tough hunt now.

I could only wish the hunting were that easy around here. I’d be checking out that flatf ender tomorrow were it in Indiana, virus or no virus.

Heck, every time I see an old ice cream truck, I always want to modify it to do something ridiculous it was never meant to do, while keeping the ice cream fun ctionality. I would also love a dragster ice cream truck, a lowrider ice cream truck (or maybe that should be a milkshake truck, lol), an ice cream Miata...

Lots of people who like to go outside and want a capable vehicle to do it in, next to no rust because we don’t salt the roads , and reasonable prices on classic Jeeps because most people here prefer Toyotas for their truck and SUV needs ( cf. me, my dad, Zoidberg , etc.) .

Time to move, clearly. Except of course for the million reasons I can’t.

For locally “born and raised ” cars here, rust seems to take about 40-50 years to set in, even if neglected. Everything survives. Not much sun to harm paint and interiors.

Speaking of that kind of thing, I spotted this neat little rig a few years ago in the small town where my mom lives. It was immaculate, this material comes out of the woodwork now and then:

Remarkable. That was probably manufactured here in Indiana, where it would have died had it not escaped out west!

Probably would have been gone by 1985.

If you want to go car hunting, come west.

I’m in AZ and the axles on my ‘11 Jeep started developing surface rust worse than my ‘66 GMC.

My ‘01 Tundra looks great.

Probably old Fiat metal :)

Up until a few years ago, my brother had an 83 Toyota pu that had likely never spent a night in the garage, lived near the ocean, and still had very little rust, just a couple spots in the bed . Unfortunately, he loaned it to a friend who put it in a ditch, and that was that.

Honestly, if I had a choice, I’d live in Portland. Cheaper than Seattle and the surrounding area, people seem better, no sales tax and you’d still be PNW.

It’s really great man. I’m near Spokane and this region has it all. The only downsides are wildfire smoke in the summer (usually) and white supremacists in ID. Other than that, great place to live and fantastic car scene. Second only to CA maybe.. and who wants to live there .
